fm radio aid - FAQ
I am soon to be applying for DSA, as I will be starting a CERT HE English Studues and craetive Writimg in September and can claim DSA for this
course.
I wanted to ask you for your opinion on both the Phonak Smartlink (I have Phonak Digital Hearing Aids) and the genie Radio aids.
Can you tell me more about them and which you feel is the better to apply for under DSA, to help me with lectures and listening to audio equipment, television etc?
Broadly speaking the fmGenie will provide better quality audio than the Smartlink system. The batteries last longer on the fmGenie and there is
longer range. The directional microphone and point and listen facilities of the Smartlink are more suited to small group environments. It really
depends on the teaching environment as to which will work best for you. With both systems the lecturer / teacher will have to wear the
transmitter.
As far as I know you apply to your LEA for DSA, they then arrange the purchase on your behalf. In our experience DSA levels of assessment vary
widely but do not favour any particular type of equipment over others. If they agree with you that a particular piece of equipment or service
is needed you will get help in obtaining it.
