Admin FAQ about using the Connevans and DeafEquipment web sites
On your DeafEquipment website I ticked the box to make a declaration that I was buying the product because of a hearing disability but was still charged VAT, why?
There could be a number of reasons:
1) Not all products are eligible to be 0% rated for VAT.
For example, there is nothing different about using a DVD player with or without a deafness disability. Subtitles are a standard, opposed to a special, feature so we all have to pay VAT in the UK/EU.
I am sure you will have seen red and green VAT faces on the products, a red (sad) VAT icon indicates that the product is not designed specifically with disability in mind and VAT must be paid. However a green (happy) VAT icon indicates that we can accept a disability declaration and not charge VAT on that product.
The happy/sad icon indicates mixed status. An example is that if you purchase batteries on their own VAT must be paid in the UK and EU however if your are purchasing batteries for use with a 0% VAT eligible product then we are permitted to not charge VAT on a limited number supplied at the time of purchase.
2) The declaration is only valid for personal use.
There is a limit to the number of alarm clocks or telephones that you may reasonably purchase for personal use. You can order as many of a product from our DeafEquipment website as you wish, but VAT will be charged if it is obvious that they are not for your own use.
3) VAT was charged on the batteries I ordered with my clock, why?
There is a limit to the number/value of associated (happy/sad) products that you may add to an order and pay 0% VAT. You are not allowed to buy a £20.00 clock and buy £50.00 of batteries VAT free!
